A Pyranine based Procedure for Evaluation of the Total Antioxidant Potential (TRAP) of Polyphenols: A Comparison with closely related Methodologies Biol. Res.
CAMPOS,ANA MARÍA; SOTOMAYOR,CARLOS PATRICIO; PINO,EDUARDO; LISSI,EDUARDO.
A novel procedure for the evaluation of total reactive antioxidant potentials (TRAP) is described. The method is based on the measurement of the bleaching of pyranine by peroxyl radicals. The addition of the antioxidants produces a clear induction time whose magnitude is directly related to the antioxidant concentration. A comparison of the values obtained with those reported employing closely related methodologies shows that the results are significantly affected by the substrate employed to monitor the steady state free radical concentration. Possible sources of this dependence are discussed

Antidiarrheal effect of extract from the bark of Combretum leprosum in mice Anais da ABC (AABC)
CAVALCANTI,PAULO M.S.; MARTINS,MARIA DO CARMO C.; NUNES,PAULO H.M.; ALVES FILHO,FRANCISCO C.; SILVA,JANYERSON D.P.; CAVALCANTI,SUZANA M.G..
Abstract This study investigated the effects of the ethanolic extract from the bark of Combretum leprosum (ECL) on intestinal transit and castor-oil induced diarrhea in mice. The oral administration of ECL (750 and 1000 mg/kg) slowed intestinal transit (ID50 of 455 mg/kg). The ECL (250-1000 mg/kg) reduced castor-oil induced diarrhea, in a time- and dose-dependent manner (p < 0.05). To determine if antidiarrheal effect of ECL involves α2-adrenergic or opioid receptor activation, the mice were pretreated with antagonists of these receptors, yohimbine or naloxone respectively. None of these drugs inhibited the antidiarrheal effect of ECL. To test if antidiarrheal effect of ECL is due to an antisecretory action, we realized the enteropooling assay on rats....

Fellenberg,MA; Espinoza,A; Peña,I; Alarcón,J.
The nutritional and sensorial characteristics of chicken meat can be affected by oxidative rancidity, process of oxidation of lipids in the meat that constitutes one of the main forms of food deterioration. This problem may be prevented or reduced by adding antioxidants to the meat during the process of marination. In the present study, the addition of a polyphenol-rich quillay extract (QLPerm®) at 5 levels (0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, and 0.20%) to the marinade of chicken meat was evaluated. The marinated meat was stored under refrigeration (6 ºC) for 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 days. Basal and induced lipid oxidation was evaluated by TBARS analysis. Microbiological quality was assessed by total coliforms and mesophillic aerobe counts. The application of this natural...

Hyogo,Akiyo; Kobayashi,Toshihiro; Garcia del Saz,Eva; Seguchi,Harumichi.
Human neutrophils stimulated by phorbol myristate acetate (PMA), an activator of protein kinase C, produce active oxygen by NADPH oxidase in intracellular structures. We added succinimidyl ester of dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate (H2DCFDA), which first emits fluorescence when oxidized with active oxygen species, to neutrophils to produce active oxygen, in order to investigate the antioxidant effects of protocatechuic acid, ferulic acid, and caffeic acid which belong to polyphenols and are widely distributed among plants. Particularly, we focused on examining whether these substances capture and eliminate active oxygen inside or outside the neutrophil cytoplasm and whether these substances inhibit NADPH oxidase. Fluorescence microscopy demonstrated...
